Jack Kirby would have been 90 years old today.
Celebrate him, for no one else will ever be able to successfully pull off this type of stuff ever again.

First Issue Special was cool. I miss those anthology books where you never knew from month to month what you were going to get. What I wouldn't give for a relaunch of Marvel Spotlight....
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah. Kirby could just get away with stuff no one could.
ReplyDeleteI still remember the original O.M.A.C. #1 - an amazing combination of cool with silly that just worked.
And on the anthology note, I used to love when you'd randomly could find a short from another character or series in the back of different marvel comics.
I stumbled across a Thanos and Drax story in back of an old Logan's Run comic recently.
I loved those Marvel covers he did back in the 70's. The idea of Ghost Rider vs. the Water Wizard actually seemed hella cool when it was drawn by Kirby.
ReplyDeleteIt's impossible to describe the whiplash when Kirby took over Superman's Pal: Jimmy Olsen.
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand why Marvel and DC don't publish try-out books. I bought every issue of First Issue Special and Marvel Spotlight.
The importance of Jack Kirby just cannot be overstated. Even his off days were brilliant. Once-mocked books like Machine Man and Devil Dinosaur have now been widely recognized as sterling examples of the comic book art.
ReplyDeleteWeird isn't it? Jack and Steve Ditko were the kiss of death for a book in the late 70 and 80's. A sure sign a company had given up on a title was to assign either one of them to it.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Captain Victory comics Jack did with Pacific, one of the first series to show wholesale death of civilians (up to that point, comics were always squeamish about showing little Sally being torn apart by giant alien bugs).
