Dave is Republican to the extreme...
What an amazing perceptual difference from 1958 to 2005. The public expectation for a similar event happening today would probably depict the last few panels showing Dave and his pals returning with held-sideways Glocks and popping caps in everyone. In 1958 we get a good citizenship lesson and a little subtle imagery in the form of that straw poised in front of Sally's mouth.
